Drugs are not the problem. Addiction and abuse of drugs are the problem.

When people have an unfulfilled need (we call it an empty hole) or a situation from their childhood, that gives them pain, they seek out something that will numb that pain, fast. For some it is overeating, for some it is relationships, for some it is working all the time, for some it is gambling, and for some it is drugs (including alcohol, which is a drug).

People, even addicts, who find a healthy way to feel good about themselves and are personally fulfilled, do not need drugs (or excessive food, or serial relationships, etc).

While addiction is never cured, it can be put in remission. There are many recovering addicts alive today because they found ways to feel good about themselves without using drugs, excessive food, lottery tickets, etc. to fill their empty hole.

If there was no need for drugs, there would be no market for them. The few people who use drugs (not addicts or drug abusers) could not sustain the drug cartels, and drug dealers would have to find other employment.

That drugs are a problem to society is not the reason why they are illegal. Alcohol has brought about many problems for society and families and yet, it's still readily available.

The root of the problem here is that we have been living in a western dominated culture. Alcohol has ALWAYS been seen as an acceptable recreational activity. In the 60's the American government needed a scapegoat for the civil unrest and so, chose to blame it on drugs. Since then, people have come to accept drugs as the cause of an unproductive and destructive character.

Also, a majority of the cannabis, poppy and coca plantations exist in places like Cuba where the prevailing American government stands against their political structure (Martial, Communist, etc.) as they are a threat to the present government if allowed to fester in their country. To allow the free trade of these raw materials would mean that these governments would be allowed to prosper and to become more than an idle threat.

Like it or not, America's cultural influence has affected all of us. It is the predominant culture in present-day society. Until America legalises drugs or another culture is able to dominate the present culture of the modern world, drugs will always be illegal. And even then, it will take more than a decade for the rest of us to deem it safe enough to follow suit.

Drugs are illegal because of politics, not because of the harm they caused. If governments cared so much, alcohol would be illegal too. It's all about money and power.

Yes, drugs should be made legal and taxable. Think about how much revenue governments are missing out on! That money could be used for so many beneficial programs for the needy.

If drugs are now illegal and are still a problem shouldn't we at least set up a way to tax the sale and use rather than clog our court systems with those who chose not to obey common sense?
