Mandatory overtime is legal, but you should be getting paid a premium rate for this time. If you are considered an "exempt" employee (salaried rather than hourly) you will not be entitled to overtime pay. The website link below discusses the mandatory overtime issue further.

Yes, it is.

If you are a non-exempt employee you will be paid 1.5 times your hourly wage for all hours over 40 in a week. If you are an exempt employee, you'll just have to suck up and work the OT.

Most employment in the US is considered "at will." As such, both the employer and the employee can terminate the employer/employee relationship without notice to the other. You are free to quit any time without giving notice or offering a reason for quitting, and your employer is free to terminate you at any time without giving advance notice or giving you a reason for your termination.

If mandatory overtime is company policy and you do not have an explicit contract that states otherwise -- either under a collective bargaining agreement or an individual contract of employment -- then the company would be fully within their rights to terminate you if you refused the overtime. Of course, you are also within your rights to say, "Take this job and shove it!" and look for greener pastures elsewhere.

many companies can demand overtime but they have to pay for it. most jobs when hired have to tell you that there is mandatory overtime, but they have to pay it. the ones who get screwed are the salary workers as there was no set hours of work until recent workers case laws decided. some companies will just come out and say everyone is working this weekend and if you don't come in your gone. the courts found it amounted to extortion and ruled employee's could not be forced to work overtime.

Yes. We have had mandatory overtime where we work for many, many years. There is nothing illegal about it as long as you are receiving time and one half of your regular hourly pay for the hours you are working. That notice should be posted somewhere at your workplace. Employers are required by law to post the law pertaining to hours and pay where employees can see it. If you have questions I suggest contacting your city attorney.

Go to the US Dept. of Labor, Wage and Hour website for an answer. But I think the answer is yes, unless your salaried. But
you still must make over the minimum wage for however many hours you work.

Yes it is, they also have to pay you accordinly as well. After 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in a week it is time and a half. Atleast in california it is that way.

As long as they pay you the overtime pay, they can mandate you work overtime.

Yes, it is usually in the fine print when you get a job. If you have a union, check the contract.
