I became an ardent coffee drinker late in life. I find that I have acquired dark circles under my eyes. Could this be due to the coffee drinking?

To answer your original question, it is possible to be allergic to coffee. But then your second question proves that it is not an allergy. The dark circles are caused by lack of good sleep. Lay off the coffee and get a few good nights sleep. The coffee is a stimulant and keeps you from getting adequate sleep.

Well, here's more info:

The Bigger Secret that is Hidden Under the Eyes
Chinese medicine says that dark circles under your eyes or bags under your eyes are a sign of an internal problem, not just a skin problem. If they are dark that indicates toxic blood and the kidneys weakness in filtering your blood. If they are swollen that indicates sluggish filtration of your kidneys.

This can lead to a variety of health problems such as water retention, scanty urine, swollen ankles, fingers and toes and possibly urinary infection.
There are several solutions you can use.

• Use a chinese kidney activator herbal treatment. This would contain such ingredients as potassium, Juniper berries, Parsley herb, Uva ursi leaves, Dandelion root (diuretic), and Chamomile flowers

• Change your diet, drink plenty of liquids preferably pure water, organic cranberry juice is good. Reduce your meat and protein consumption, and drink tea, preferably watermelon seed or green, sweetened with black strap molasses.

• Cleanse the colon.
Remember problems that show on the surface are indicators of problems inside. There are other herbs that can absorb the toxins, serve as diuretics designed for the kidneys, and provide trace minerals to replenish the body.

Oh yeah and another thing. You should get at least 6-8 hours of sleep, the best times are between 10 pm and 6 am.

It is possible to be allergic to coffee, and to be sensitive to caffiene. But like the others, I do not think the dark circles are from allergies. You need some rest. Try not to drink coffee too late in the day.

I would suspect that, yes, it is possible to be allergic to coffee. However, I don't think that dark under-eye circles would be an immediate symptom.

Dark under-eye circles tend to be hereditary (which is my case, thank you Mom), resultant from fatigue, or from age. The under-eye skin is incredibly thin and the blood vessels located there give the tissue a bluish/purplish/greenish tinge. As you age your skin thins over your entire body so vessels under your eyes that were not present when you were younger may become apparent.

Also, the caffeine in coffee is a vasodilator, meaning it causes your vessels to widen. Increased blood flow through the vessels under your eyes could be causing the discoloration.

I don't think that's allergy, since coffee contains caffeine, w/c is s stimulant, it somehow gives you a waking effect. It keeps you awake, and maybe that's why you have those dark circles on your eyes, you may haven't slept well because of too much caffeine.

Oh you could also be allergic to coffee but yeah other symptoms should also come out. furthermore, you could be allergic to anything...
but i don't think you're allergic to coffee...

It's possible to be allergic to any substance which contains protein. But I'm not sure if having dark circles under eyes is an allergic reaction in itself. It seems to me like it's a sign of not getting enough sleep.

Yup! I have an adult friend who developed an allergy to coffee. She is so allergic that if she even smells coffee, she has an asthma attack!
