I have a 1984 Mercury Capri. It won't stay running enough to move. It appears to be getting too much gas into the carb. The air breather cover was wet with gas. It's a 4 cylinder. I think 2.3 L. Not a turbo or anything. Automatic. Any ideas as to what's going on? Can't seem to find the MAP sensor as was going to check that too. I just got the car and it was not taken care of. I can't seem to find the fuel filter, I followed the line. Thanks.

Float in the carb is hanging up.... need to rebuild it.... Or replace with after market one. I hope this was helpful.

Yes, sounds like the floats are stuck. Rebuilding the carb is a good idea, probably a necessity. Check and change all the fluids if you can. Motor oil, gear oil, etc. Might be able to knock the floats loose by a LIGHT rap on the front of the carb - don't get crazy here. There shouldn't be a MAP sensor on this car because it's not fuel injected. Don't give up on this car! As long as it isn't a rust bucket. Old Capris are kinda rare. Around here, anyway.

I don't think they had a carb on the 1984 models. They should be throttle body. The TPS sensor maybe. If it does have a carb...what kind is it?? If it's a holley/weber, you can find another on ebay or a rebuild kit on ebay cheaper than in the part stores. It's a 5200 holley. It's actually one of the best carbs you can have. If yours is different, you can just buy one on ebay and do a retrofit. It takes some work, but it will never let you down. If you want to fix your carb on there now, it sounds like the float has a pinhole in it or the nipple is gone off of the needle. The rebuild kit will come with a new needle and seat. The float may be a trick to find. Again...look to ebay. Good luck. If you are looking in a junk yard, the Dodge Aries K had the same carb and the parts will interchange.

You don't describe the problem too well. If 1984 was pre-injector it is likely as said before a stuck or bad float or needle valve dirt. If the richness is of another sort I believe the carb models had some form of "choke pulloff" which opens the choke upon start. Sometimes they don't depending on the model it could be the vacumn diaphram on the pulloff etc.
