I don't know... watch the modern/recent films that have come out, or are coming out within the past 2-4 years. Do you remember when even the small, superfluous roles called for convincing executions of whatever characters they were portraying? Lead characters alike are amiss, as far as talent goes!Even some of the BEST actors are just not as good as they used to be!
Trust me... at shool, the people who are aspiring actors are nil convincing, & it's worrying the HELL out of me! I'm an aspiring screenwriter, & can't stand the thought of having my work go to s*** just because the casting director couldn't choose more suitable actors! For the people who actually care about the wellfare of the arts.... we might be doomed...

Well, you could blame the lack of funding in public schools for the cultivation of the arts, but I think the reasons go deeper than that.

Simply, I believe the culture (majority of it) is willing to accept less. They are less astute in recognizing artistic quality and therefore willing to follow the mass media in crowning the mediocre as "superb".

I completely concur with your observation - compare the work of Sir L.Olivier, A. Hitchcock, D. Ellington with what we have today - Kevin Costner and Keanu Reeves, Jerry Bruckheimer and Kenny G.

'Nuff said.

I have to agree with you. I don't have to tell you--it's all about celebrity--and the money, baby. And don't even get me started on the idiots that pass for celebrities. The stupid things that people can get famous for boggles the mind. As far as veteran actors phoning it in--they got lazy/fed up with the whole thing. They don't get paid any less for not working up to their potential, do they? It is becoming disgusting. Unless and until the studios stand up and put a stop to it, it will continue. I guess we would have to be better educated and willing to pass on those sorts of movies. If we hit them in the pocketbook, that could have an effect. But then, that might put you out of work......how much are you willing to give up to effect a change?

Sorry to hear about your disillusionment.

Hmm, I think there are lots of great actors.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Bill Murray come to mind immediately.

I just watched "Me, you and everyone we know" a little while ago. I thought the casting and the acting were brilliant

People are focused on sex sells.....which is crap in my mind....do the producers really think that Tom Cruise and Angeli Jolie will really make them money...They are the biggest fakes around...I myself like watching big action shows...but I don't need movie (STARS) playing the part. They need to get a grip on reality....Stars don't sell movies...Stories do! and I'm sick of the weak repetitive story lines. :) Wake up Hollywood...no wonder no-one goes to the theatres anymore.

Because we lack the depth society once had. We de-emotionalize everything. We can hear about people getting murdered and not even feel bad, and this translates into acting. We lack emotion, so it is hard to act emotional when you don't know emotion. Just my theory, hope i could help!

I think it is because of the money. Even if the movie bombs, they still get millions. They just worry about the money, not the art. Sad really, we all miss out because of their greed.

Because acting doesn't matter anymore. Hotness is all Hollywood cares about
