No, Rooney was stupid for reacting that way, if he had not shoved him he would have just got a booking. Even if he was provoked he should not have reacted that way, ref sent him off for the shoving. Ref was not even interested in Rooney until he did that!

I'm not an English supporter... I'm Scottish!!!

I have to say there is something very suspicious going on with this World Cup and Rooney's sending off was wrong and it was planned by the Portugese to capitalize on any opportunity to have Hot Head Rooney sent off.

I suspect Man U fans will boo Ronaldo the first chance they get and a transfer will happen.

The Portuguese team has horseshoes up their arses and I hope the French but them out of their misery. I can't imagine watching an Italy v Portugal World Cup. I'm getting sick just thinking about it.

So, the Portuguese players 'lured' Rooney into thrashing about with a couple of their players for the ball near-ish to the referee, prompting the inevitable violent melee that Rooney is so fond of to break out, and then they subtly goad the referee into noticing Carvalho's crushed testicles, and taa-daa! Rooney gets a red card! Plausible, yes. But EVERY team does that against Rooney. Every single team has known that Rooney is more likely to kick the opposition than the ball, for quite a while now. He is excellent, great entertainment, but unfortunately quite a liability as well. BUT, if that was a Portuguese 'set-piece', come on, it's quite a novel one...

Many of your answers to date ignore the fact that Ronaldo provoked Rooney whilst the ref. was there, and hence the push.
I am convinced that Ronaldo set Rooney up, do you remember the Ronaldo wink to his own bench. The ref. ignored what Ronaldo said. I am not saying Rooney was smart, but a red card? I am surprised that the players don't kill each other after the match because there is no sportsmanship left.

oy.. how many times does this question being asked. Rooney was out of line he deserved a red card, if it was set up, don't you think it's idiotic to let a guy stepped onto your groin on purpose? it's not logical! anyway i'm not much of an England fan, but performance by the English formation was quite okay, even though they lost one of their forwardssetting a goaless game with 10 men through out the rest is pretty impressive, its just that Portugal had it better on the Penalty shoot outs!

I agree with chickadee. Rooney knows Cristiano Ronaldo well enough not to react at all. He should have bend down. Patted the chaps shoulder with an 'all right mate' and walked away. He might have got yellow or nothing, but his dignity would have been in tact and England might have got that one important goal.

Maybe those in charge shouldn't pamper one golden boy but look out for a whole team!!! World Cups tend to be won by whole teams not individuals however great they are.
