If you are just planning on riding your bike on the sidewalk and trails, get a mountain bike. If you plan on doing tricks, get a bmx bike. The most common would be the mountain bike, so I am assuming that is the one you will need.

Dude, my bike is totally awesome. It's a BMX and I do the coolest jumps outside in the backyard. Sometimes the neighbors come out to see me tear it up. I've hit my head on the concrete a couple times and I lost a tooth once, but dude that's the price you've got to pay if you want to totally shred. BMX's cool for freestyle as well. Be on the lookout man -- I call myself "animal jones". Mountain bikes are for Star Wars geeks, dude. If a woman had a choice between one of those mountain goat dudes and a bona fide pimp *** BMX hydrogen bomb dropping tricksta like myself, they wouldn't even give those mountain bikin' dunderheads a second look. I would choose a mountain bike, it's more versatile;
You can ride it in the woods
You can bike on long road trips
You can climb hills easier with the lower gears
you can cruise on the road faster with the higher gears.
Unless you want to do tricks and or bmx racing, I would definately suggest the mountain bike

I think BMX is better
but mountain can be good for rocky places

well i prefer bmx, but if i were going for a long ride it would be a mountain. i have friends who are champion bmx riders, i've seen some of them ride it's fun.

i like bmx bikes but thats cuz u can do a lot of tricks on them. mtn bikes r used for rougher riding. so it really depends on wat ur doin. if ur goin for a bike ride u should use or get the mtn one. if u wanna do tricks then use or get the bmx one.
