In making college decisions, it is imperative that you choose what is best for YOU. These are both great schools.
But Columbia and Duke have entirely different cultures. On the whole, Duke is more politically conservative, Columbia more politically progressive. Duke is more suburban, Columbia urban. Duke has southern charm, propriety, and mores, Columbia has Manhattan's fast pace, cultural diversity, and social consciousness.
Knowing your area of intended study will also help you to make your choice. Engineering? Duke. Political science? Columbia.
A visit to each campus will enable you to discover which is really best for you.

It totally depends on where you want to go, do you want to be in the city or in the burbs? I would personally go to Duke because I find NYC just too overwhelming, but maybe you like a big city so it would be a better choice.
