It has to be the same protocol. 802.11a only talks to cards that can read 802.11a, 802.11b is the same, 802.11g cards can read 802.11b or 802.11g, but 802.11g routers only talk to 802.11g cards.

A lot of 802.11g cards are coming out now that are compatible with 802.11a as well.

Just make sure your device (laptop) supports the same protocol as the provider (wireless router probably)

The main choices now are
- 802.11b
- 802.11g

the G standard is backwards compatible.

Yes. Aslong they support 802.11x..whcih they probably do.
