When I was in sports in high school and college there wasn't anything else to wear except a jock (25 years ago). Now a days there are some choices. It wasn't that bad wearing a jock though...it sure beats having your manhood bouncing around as you run, etc. Wouldn't want to wear it around full time though.

I've read the other answers, take your pick of what you want to believe, but I will offer you this. They are not as uncomfortable as the injuries jock straps try to prevent.

It depends on how you wear it. When worn on the head it can give great support to those who have trouble holding their brains in place and besides it looks very attractive. For those who have their brains in the nether regions it can also be useful. As to comfort it depends on how big the object being held is, in length and circumference. As mentioned in an earlier answer - when not worn and needed, the results of not wearing one could far exceed the discomfort of wearing one.

It's not as comfortable as regular underwear, but it's not bad. It beats having your "equipment" jogging faster than you are.

"Down on the football, football field,
You never can tell what a heel can weild,
So you gotta wear your jock a lot ..."

Wore one in football and as a catcher. Not comfortable. Where a pair of shorts under it and a pair of spandex over to hold in place-worked for me.

I agree with one of the other answers...they do protect against much greater pains than they create...when i wore one (for football) it kinda scratched up the inside of my legs...but saved me once or twice. I play outfield for baseball - so it isn't worth the trouble to wear one...
