You have to pull them out. It's not quick or easy, just pull em out.

While pulling them out might work, it is easier on the back and arms if you just get a hoe (use a heavy duty one, not a light weight one) and chop them up. First of all, even if you pull all the big weeds, there will still be a ton of baby ones. Only by tilling the soil up will you uproot all the weeds. Next, get straw (not hay) and put around your plants. That acts as a mulch and keeps weeds down. It's called the no-till method and works great. Using a hoe might use some muscles you don't use all the time, but it is good exercise too.

Cover the weeds with newspaper or a trap - it blocks all sunlight and will kill them. If you try round-up, be careful not to get it on any vegetables or it will kill them too! You can also mulch over the weeds, but without first weeding, its not as effective.
