Pennsylvania. It is close enough to NYC where you could take a trip there anytime, but yet it has a low enough standard of living, especially in mid to western part of that state.

Virginia is a red state, meaning that there would be less religious tolerance outside of Baptist or Pentecostal denominations; and in New England and New Jersey, the standard of living is way too high.
