Holidays are more than gatherings and gifts; there is meaning behind the celebrations. How do you help young people understand the important gifts of American citizenship? Other than cookouts and fireworks, how do you celebrate with kids? Also, does anyone have any easy craft ideas for little ones?

Happy Fourth!

why not try explaining how we became independent. Or make it a day to take them to the museum of history. For thanksgiving and Christmas we act out plays about the holiday, so why not on the 4th. If u think hard enough u can come up with alot of stuff and u would be teaching them the meaning of July 4th and maybe about how your family became americans too

As a Brit, I would not really know how to get to the essence of the celebration, but I would suggest making flags together. Some felt pens, paper and cocktail sticks could make great decorations for food that you prepare.

Have a great holiday!

I tell them that 4th of July is the day when the white man, who had built this entire government on the backs of captured slaves, decided they had enough money to not have to listen to their King any more.

I tell them that from that day forward, these wicked beast have become a tyrant to the entire planet. I explained how this coutry has toppled over 50 other governments and now the world is poisoned with their God-less worship of fame, riches and democracy (demons for short).

Smile.

We make sure they know to place their hand over their heart when the American Flag marches by in the parade. We try to instill respect in them for the flag and our country.
And then we enjoy the day with gratitude for living in this great country.
