This is the desperate act of a scared little dictator that has witnessed the power of the United States. I imagine he is afraid that when we are finished with Iraq that he might be next. The sad thing is that his people are suffering. Japan is an ally so we will protect them. I am not so worried about a weapon reaching the United States homeland as I am one of our allies. That would drag us into a war.
This is one of those times that I think if we sent a stealth Delta Force in and assasinated him, nobody would care. Consider what outcome we might have had had we done this to Saddam.
To answer your question, I think the "heating up" is all to get attention in order to get sanctions lifted. If you dont give me this, I will do that. I do not think he will launch. Additionally, I dont think he has thought this through. I bet he only has one or two missles. If he lanches one, how can he defend his nation against the power of the United States with one (or a few) long range missle and expect to live. His nation is one we could destroy with cruise missles from a control center in Florida. The question should be, "What will China do if the U. S. responds to a missle launch from N. Korea whether the missles are nuclear tipped or not?"

We won't go to nuclear war with North Korea or anyone else, for that matter -- with the one qualification being that they don't initiate a nuclear war with us.
As for going to non-nuclear war with North Korea, I don't see that happening either for alot of reasons, mostly (1) the US people won't sponsor another "pre-emptive" war; (2) the North Koreans seem to know enough NOT to force us into a retaliatory war; (3) the other countries in the region definitely don't want to antagonize North Korea (especially those appeasement-minded South Koreans); (4) there are probably more effective and less costly ways to deal with North Korea, namely assasination, just about any kind of serious sanctions, isolation.

Possibly but not very likely....all we're going to see is brinksmanship from a rump state who's people are starving. They will get the most they can out of the nuclear standoff...

We have the ability to eliminate the Korean threat before a response is possible if we choose. we are about 60 years ahead of them in Tech. Our stealth bombers could eliminate their launch sites without warning. they have a very small program!

I've been telling everyone that things are so bad for the Republican party right now that they only way they are going to stay in office after 2008 is another conflict/war.
They know this and it will happen.

i dont think bush's puppet masters see any monetary value in going to war with korea, they have nothing we want, and they are as crazy as the iraqis, but a whole lot tougher.
