Cyrano DeBergerac by Edmond Rostand. Classic play about a french solider in the "3 Musketeer" era who falls in love with the beautiful girl named Roxanne. But because of his enormously long nose, he has so little self-esteem that he does not dare to even speak to her. So instead he helps a handsome, but "dumb ox" friend of his, Christian, woe her by giving him romantic lines, woeing her from behind a tree with flowery speech pretending to be Christian, and wirtting long love letters. But it the end Roxanne realizes the Cyrano is the one who has been romancing her, and rushes to his side, only to find him dying for on a battlefield.
Steve Martin made an excellent "update" of the plot with Darryl Hannah a few years back called "Roxanne". It is worth seeing the movie just to see Martin perform the famous "20 insults" about the size of his nose.
Directed the play about 3 years ago with a local community theater group.

Do you mean the classic play "Cyrano De Bergerac?" Written by Edmond Rostand, it tells the story of a cavalier soldier who had a very large nose. He is in love with his cousin Roxanne, but she loves one of the other soldiers in the company, a rather vapid young man (Christian) who does not know how to woo her. So Cyrano masquerades as Christian and gives him the words and the poetry to woo Roxanne. I won't tell you the ending, but it is romantically tragic.

Director: Jean-Paul Rappeneau Rating PG
Plot Outline Embarrassed by his large nose, a romantic poet/soldier romances his cousin by proxy.
Plot Synopsis: A dashing officer of the guard and romantic poet, Cyrano de Bergerac falls in love with his cousin Roxane without her knowing. His one fault in his life, he feels, is his large nose and although it may have been a forming influence in his rapier-sharp wit, he believes that Roxane will reject him. He resorts to writing letters to her on behalf of one of his cadets, Christian, who is also in love with Roxane but just doesn't know how to tell her. She falls for the poetic charm of the letters but believes that they were written by Christian.
This is the one made in 1990. You can get it on DVD

I believe you may be referring to Cyrano, who was ashamed of his rather large nose, and could not get himself to tell the woman he loved about his feelings for her. A friend of his also loved the woman but did not know how to talk to her, so Cyrano wrote love letters for him to give to her as if his friend had wrote them himself
