This is something that there is a lot of debate about. Unfortunately, the universe has expanded so far (and at the start, so quickly) that it appears nobody will ever be able to tell for sure, unless somebody figures out how to break the speed of light barrier - which is a whole point of debate in itself.

The current range generally agreed by most scientists who are going on something a little more likely than what God said and somebody wrote in a book, is between 11 and 17 billion years, give or take.

We can fairly sure, though that the sun is about half way through it's life, so everyone reading this is fairly likey to die before the sun does.

The universe is ever expanding though it is thought to have originated form the sun...so the universe and the sun are the same age.It really depends upon the theorem of the beginning,I'm using a scientific one of course, though they are many scientific ones so I'm using the theorem which bases the whole occurrence of the universe as a cosmic mistake-the theorem states that a asteroid,or Star or something else knocked a bit of the son off and as it moved away from the sun it dropped pieces of the hot liquid along with it,that's why the earth has magma, which surfaces to form lava(the two are not what make the sun though it is believed that due to decades of being away from it they changed their structure).

Well the odds of that being true are a million to one,in fact all scientific theorems are a million to one because no can explain how earth is so perfect for in habitants. So id stick to the god theorem in-case anyone asks.

Well if the sun is 6 billion years old, It's safe to say that no one really knows the beginning of the universe. And how can we definelty tell the sun is 6 billion years old anyway? The universe could have always been here...scary thought if you think about it.

The ultimate goal of astronomers is to understand the structure, behavior, and evolution of all of the matter and energy that exists. Astronomers call the set of all matter and energy the universe. The universe is infinite in space, but astronomers believe it does have a finite age. Astronomers accept the theory that about 14 billion years ago the universe began as an explosive event resulting in a hot, dense, expanding sea of matter and energy. This event is known as the big bang (see Big Bang Theory). Astronomers cannot observe that far back in time. Many astronomers believe, however, the theory that within the first fraction of a second after the big bang, the universe went through a tremendous inflation, expanding many times in size, before it resumed a slower expansion.

The sun is not quite as old as that, it's about 4.6 billion years old, same as the rest of the solar system. As for the universe, others mentioned it - 13.7 billion years are the best current estiment based on studies of the cosmic microwave background radiation.

Current theory says the big bang occurred somewhere between 10 and 13 billion years old. As for what was around before that, if anything, it's unclear.

The age of the Universe can also be estimated from a cosmological model based on the Hubble constant and the densities of matter and dark energy. This model-based age is currently 13.7 +/- 0.2 billion years.
