Salamanders eat and climb on trees and play with other salamanders. They do not fake dead. I hope yours isn't.

Salamanders are amphibians like frogs and toads. That means they lay eggs in the water and the babies are like tadpoles with gills. They develop much like frogs and eventually replace their gills with lungs. While many types continue to live in ponds, some move away and live in wood piles or under rocks. In colder climates they do what frogs do and burrow deep into the mud and hibernate. I have never seen any pretend to be dead.

they stay moist, in and around water and eat small invertebrates... some of them have some pretty kinky protective displays when they feel threatened... they can curl up into odd "don't eat me I'm poisonous" positions revealing their bellies, and I guess maybe faking dead... I've never seen them do this in person. But have seen pictures... I think the wild ones do it more often than the captive ones...
