Main Board, is the one that holds all your card, try to get an Intel Chipset one.
Also the memory and the processor goes there, Pentium is a brand for Intel for the Processor, also if your budget is lower you can try a processsor from the manufacturer AMD.
The memory , there are many kinds and brand.
Then you have Sound Card, Lan Card, Modem and Video Card, you can have them very generic kind inside the board or buy them separately, depends on your video needs is that you chose your video card, same as your sound card, lan is for network, including internet, and if the internet is broadband the Modem is not needed.

Hard Drive is where you storage your information, your other memory, seagate is a very good chinese brand, also you have maxtor , wenster digital as other good brands. The Hitachi Deskstar is very recommended. Buy high if you storage lots, buy a normal 40 or 60 gb if you just navigate and see mails and ask and answer questions here.

Motherboard.. Main part / interface ( Asus is good, comes with built in sound, graphics and network if you're on a budget)
Ram... Memory (Kingston or Corsair is good, more is better)
Graphics card ( ATI or Nvidia)
Sound Card (Creative)
Hard Disk (Seagate or Maxtor.. Bigger the better)
Keyboard / Mouse... your choice but wireless is best
Webcam ... I like Logtech, some with built in Microphone
CD Rom / DVD Rom / DVD Writer ... I prefer Sony, but get a combo if you're on a budget.
Speakers... Altec Lansing is good

well it is not that simple just upgrading a computer there is a lot to it.

first u got your processor....thus comes in many different types..firtst u have amd and intel.....people have there own opinions on which one is better, but for gamers they tend to like amd. Then with the processor is the socket...like the size..or how many pins it has. Now u got to match this up to your motherboard. like if your motherboard is a 478 socket then u have to get like a pentium 4 478, 3.2 ghz...blah blah.....oh gee this is going to be a lot of typing....but how bout this......u can email me or something and I will be happy to answer any ?'s
