If you eat the cake, it dissapears in your stomach. You cannot have the cake, then. It comes from those wittly French people, they don't know what they're talking about. Read "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens.

This came from, I believe, Marie Antoinette. It was said she was very splendid, so instead of wanting to give bread to the commoners, she said let them eat cake. Once you eat the cake, it is, of course, gone. You cannot have anything you eat on a permanent basis, so it is said the statement was made in sarcasm.

Great question! Actually, we have misconstrued this statement over the years. It was originally "You can't eat your cake and have it, too." which also makes more sense.
I've often wondered at the meaning of "flying by the seat of your pants" which invokes thoughts of Tom & Jerry cartoons and planes falling apart. Any ideas?
Best wishes to all.

It applies best to wedding Cakes, I've found.
There is no way to keep that beautiful pristine cake, yet still enjoy it.
Even on the biggest day of your life, you can't have your cake, and eat it too.

"You can't have your cake and eat it too" refers to needing to make choices. You can't have a perfectly decorated cake AND cut into it and eat it. One way or the other.
