There are theories that synchronous menstruation is caused by pheromones or hormones. I'm not certain if any specific studies have been done.

My friend and I were discussing this the other day when discussing being in the Marine boot camp is hell because everyone is on their period at once. The reason that roommates, house mates, and basically any female not on birth control (which manipulates periods) have periods at the same time is because of gravitational pull. Think about it. If you are in the same place geographically all the time you and your roommate have the same gravitational force acting upon you. You also have to remember that the period (28days) is based upon the cycles of the moon. Hope that helps a little.
