These little creatures, must be handled, closely after birth...to be socialized. Most of the little creatures, must be socialized, early...to have them tamed. Also, if they're handled roughly, they'll usually nip...to let you know.

I've had hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils and rats. I currently have 4 pet rats. It may surprise you, to know that out of all of the others critters, I've had...the rats are the cleanest and the most gentle! They can also be trained, to use a litter box! Rats are the only small critters, I'll ever have! They're the sweetest, and once they accept you, as their human...they'll play...any time of day, even though they're nocturnal! B

If your hamster is used to people it shouldn't bite. If you are nice and gentle with it, it should not bite. Have you thought that someone else around the house isn't being very nice to it? This will cause it to bite (even the owner). Is it only 1 year old or is it older? Old age can cause a hamster to bite too. Or if it is sick.

If your hamster bites you a tetanus shot is required. Maybe your hamster would rather have one of those hamster toys to play with.

It is the nature for rats to bite. Please don't be offended that I called your hamster a rat. It's just that they are so similar in so many ways. Hamsters can be cute and fun, but it is in their nature. So be careful. Give them plenty of space and toys. They will be less agressive.

Hamsters will bite if you startle them. Make sure they see your hand approaching it and don't grab him suddenly. Also, if you accidentally drop it, don't pick it up right away because it will be scared.

What does "play with them" mean? If the hamster bit you, it means you did something that stressed or scared the animal.
