NO, just plain old hot tap water is best, unless you have ridiculously hard water. The water being hot helps dissolve the sugar. You do have to change it for fresh mix every other day WITHOUT FAIL! Red food coloring is not required or recommended. Run the feeder's reservoir through a sanitizing dish washer at least once every ten days or so.

yes you do but you boil it with the sugar already in the water...
one part sugar to four parts water and boil for about five minutes.be sure to let it cool to room temp before filling bird feeders

sorry my bad, red dye, go ahead and sugar away! yes boil first, then add sugar to delay spoilage.
