I would say that weekly you should run a spyware/adware detector such as Ad-Aware SE that you can get from www.downloads.com or from www.lavasoft.com Watch out for Spybot Search and Destroy because it puts its own adware on your computer. Run that at least weekly and run your defrag program once a week, and run it even if it says that the volume doesn't need degfragmenting. Go to your Internet Explorer and click on Tools, Internet Options and then click on delete History, and then Delete your Temporary Internet files in the same box you are at. you don't have to delete your cookies because they do NOT slow your computer down at all. All they do is tell the websites that you go to that you have been there and what you did on their sites. If you do delete your cookies, then you will have to type in your passwords instead of your computer remembering them. I never delete my cookies, but you can if you so desire.
To make your computer faster, you can also get a cable modem setup from your cable company or else a DSL Digital Subscriber Line from your phone company. If you use Wal Mart or People PC or wherever, Your computer will seem to operate slowly because a dial up modem is slow; very slow.
To generally speed up your computer, you can buy more RAM, more Cache Memory, A better CPU if your Mother Board will take it or you can overclock the CPU., but don't attempt that unless you know what you are doing.
You can also speed things up by cleaning up your registry with a registry cleaner program.
If you are using Windows XP, you can click on Start and then Run and then type in Msconfig into the little window there and when it comes up, you click on the start tab and you can uncheck any programs that you don't want to be running when the computer boots up. This will save you time in the booting process plus you can always click on the programs when you need them to be used. After you do that and reboot, an Msconfig window will pop up during your boot process and then just click on the little box in the lower left hand corner of the Msconfig window and that will make it so that Msconfig won't come on during boot the next time. You can always go back and run Msconfig again if you find you told the computer not to boot something that you really need to be running at start up.

1) Run Disk Clean (right click on your C:\ Drive in "My Computer")
2) Uninstall Unnecessary Programs (Start -- Control Panel -- Add/Remove Programs)
3) Stop Start-Up Programs (Start -- Run -- Type "msconfig" -- Start-up tab -- Click "Disable All")
Also, I have a 3.4GHz processor and it's basically a dust magnet. I open my PC up every year to clean it out with a few dry napkins. I had a dust ball size of my palm by the time i finished. Although to some it might not show much improvement at all, for me, it was a bit og a shock. Try it!

If your computer is running slow you may want to contact your computer vendor. This depends on how long you have had the equipment. Below are some steps for speeding up your internet connection:
First start by deleteing any cache, cookies, and history
(Contact your isp for the bandwidth you are supposed to be getting. Then you may want to run a speedtest at bandwidthplace.com)
second you may want to run a disc defrag.
you also may want to powercycle your modem sometimes this helps.
run a spyware removal program, and virus scan.(make sure you run these programs daily)
stay up-to-date with your windows updates.
Also you can sometimes reformat the computer and this helps.

A few ways -
SIMPLEST - download adaware. google adware spyware program .. it's free
NEXT - defrag your hard drive
NEXT - limit the amount of programs that loads on startup. 2 ways to do this:
1 - easy way --- go to start/programs/start menu -- anything you don't need delete out of that folder (it doesn't delete the program)
2 - go to start/run/msconfig. click the tab of start menu and look at what loads when your computer loads. You'll be surprised at how much crap your computer loads!
