Niacin does lower the ldl and will raise the hdl. The key is that you have to work up to the higher doses to do this. Do not take time release niacin as this poses the most risk for liver toxicity, and no flush niacin doesn't to anything. The straight stuff is the best. Start out with low doses for weeks at a time, and get used to the occasional flush. If you take an aspirin 30 minutes prior to the niacin it will reduce the flush. You would need to be taking 1500mg daily in two 750 doses for niacin to be most effective. Some people can work up to the limit of 3000mg daily. Other ways to lower cholesterol is to increase you soluble fiber daily to at least 3 grams, and lower you saturated fat intake.

Although I cannot speah much to Niacin, I can make a few other suggestions if you are interested. The following have been showing to lower cholesterol and are the same as what I have suggested to my mother who has diabetes, high cholestorol, Lyme disease and on and on....Well anyway....Her is the information: Chromium Picolinate 4-600 mg per day, Aged garlic such as Kyolic, and Essential Fatty Acids (as directed on label) but one that is not always included which is High Lignin flax seed oil as well. There are others but these seem to work quite well so far. Of course, if you are in doubt, you should always speak with your physician.

Niacin therapy is not as "natural" as one would imagine. Niacin is often produced synthetically through chemical conversion of nicotine into nicotinic acid. Furthermore, when one takes any member of the b-complex family in isolation, it can cause a depletion or imbalance in the other members of that family (consider that niacin does not exist by itself in nature), and high dose niacin therapy has been shown to cause a whole battery of side effects, not unlike those that occur with the use of statin drugs. At doses of 500mg cases of hepatotoxicity so severe have occured that liver transplant was necessary.
I would look into using Red Yeast Rice, a safe, effective alternative to the statins. There is a good article available here:

Niacin can be very helpful...to avoid the "flush," take the niacin at night just before bedtime.
I thought that Red Yeast Rice was a good alternative until I read Dr. Michael Murray's book (Treating Diabetes Naturally???). He says that Merck convinced the FDA to prohibit non-prescription forms of RYR from containing the active compounds that actually help. Sort of like selling garlic pills with no allicin!
Foods with pectin, like apples, are also very helpful.
Good luck!

It will help a great deal, but if you have never taken niacin before be prepared for the flush! I will make you feel like your skin is on fire for several minutes to over a half hour depending on the amount you take. Your life will be miserable during those minutes....
