No. Simply adding a hard drive will do nothing for Windows. You need to create at least one partition on it and then format it. Then it will appear as a "D:" or "E:" or some other drive letter (depending on what other CD/DVD drives and hard drives/partitions you may have already installed). Once you have a drive letter assigned to the new drive you would have to consciously save files to the drive and/or install programs.

Partitioning and formatting of the disk can be done through the Computer Management utility, which has a utility called Disk Management where this is done.

You could also "mount" the drive under another folder - for example, create a folder on C: called "new disk" and then you would "mount" the new hard drive to the new disk folder and whenever you saved to that folder it would actually be saved to the new hard drive. But this is not generally done, especially in homes and small businesses.

Why would it make your computer go faster? You're just adding space. Now it COULD speed things up a *LITTLE* if you move the pagefile to the other (new) disk, but if that's it and even that probably wouldn't provide a noticeable increase.

If you REPLACE your existing drive with a faster drive it might help things a bit, but you would have to replace it. And you can only get so fast. If your computer is slow, the first thing you should consider upgrading is your RAM. Then your CPU. Lastly the hard disk.

After installation, you have to make sure the second drive is set to Slave. You do this by setting the jumper wire on the back of the drive to whatever your drive instructions say is the right terminal to put the jumper wire.

What happens is then you continue to boot up from your C:\ Drive and then you can put whatever files you want on your new drive such as partition it G:\ Drive for Games, P:\ Drive for Photographs or whatever you want. The best program to use to partition your drive is called Partition Magic because if you use FDisk, you can only partition after formatting. Partition Magic will allow you to partition without formatting first.

You don't have to install another operating system on the second disk unless you want to do it. You can put another system on the second drive such as Linux, which is a very good operating system. You may put in as many drives as you want and your computer's power supply can drive. Drive letters go up to Z. Of course you must instruct your Bios which drive you are adding by hitting possibly the F1 Key or whatever key your particular computer designates as the key to get into the bios.

Adding a second hard drive (HDD) will not make your computer run faster. What you are looking for is Random Access Memory (RAM) as well as increasing Virtual Memory.

To change Virtual Memory:

Right click on My Computer > Properties > Advanced Tab >Performance Subtab > Settings > Advanced Tab > Virtual Memory Subtab > Change > Custom, Inital&maximum size usually can be doubled.

To install RAM:

Id go to http://www.crucial.com/ and use their tool to decide which type of RAM you need.

It will if you set up the second hard drive as slave drive, and also you need to go into setup, to make sure its turned on to find it, and make sure you have them pluged in right. also when you go into setup, make sure the boot order is still correct, and make sure all the drives are what they should be.
