I think they should focus on finding the strongest possible candidate, and then rally all the (figurative) troops around him. If the Republicans begin a typical smear campaign, the Dems might (emphasis on "might") be able to hoist the GOP on their own petard. If the Dems just fight back with their own smears, it'll prob. backfire. The "farther-right" in this country are just too powerful right now for the Democrats to have any wiggle room.
Personally, I believe that it helps when Congress is held by one party, and the president belongs to the other. Look at the 8 years Clinton was in office: we had a balanced budget, the world loved us, everybody loved Clinton (even the Republicans -- he gave them so much that was so easy to gripe about), and the whole nation got free entertainment from the Monica Lewinsky thing. How many times before that had you ever heard Tom Brokaw say "oral sex"?????? C'mon, those years were fun.

Themselves? No, wait, that's what they've been doing and it seems to work the opposite way...they keep losing elections. If they want to win in 2006 or 2008 they have to present a unified front behind a single candidate that appeals to all of their base. President Al Franken?

Bush.
People forget how it was in 1999 after 8 years of Clinton bashing. My point is that it works. People, even when uncertain about their options, will vote against someone quicker than they will vote for someone.
This will work as long as there is not some big against Bush guy running ... ie, Powell

I think the Independents have a good shot in 2008, I think a lot of people are pretty much disgusted with our current batch of 'representatives', ask a lot of people and they don't even vote because it's a 'no confidence' thing...basically it seems like the deep-pockets lobbyists have most of it wrapped up, forestalling good communication between voters and their representatives.
That's a GREAT place to start with good, ground-up reforms...

We will stay on track. The problems in this country need to be addressed. If we attack no one and don't answer negative ads and lies maybe thinking Americans will too stay on track and not be sidelined.

Well, obviously THEY believe attacking Bush will win them the election - whether or not that's true is yet to be seen.

I guess when you have nothing better you have to attack with reckless abandon.Maybe that's why you lose elections.
