Best text editor is notepad. I think everyone has it, and I use it all the time.

You have two of them within Windows, at least in most of the versions of Windows. You have Notepad and Wordpad. They are really basic text editors without the bells and whistles of Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, and ones like those in which you can do much more than the basic things to your text.

Notepad and Wordpad should already be included with Windows. If you're looking for a little more, you could try OpenOffice. OpenOffice includes a bunch of programs similar to those in Microsoft Office but OpenOffice is free. The programs in OpenOffice are compatable with those in Microsoft Office as well.

Try Google - there are many out there.
My personal favorite is NoteTab - a freeware tabbed editor with a cool macro language.

If you are running windows, Notepad should already be installed. It will be found under Start Menu->Programs->Accessories
