If a woman is 36 weeks pregnant and the doctor say's that she is not dilated and not even close to it, does that mean she will probably go at 40+ weeks? Is it possible that dilation can begin within the 36th week? Once a female is dilated, how soon until labor?

Well, the thing about dialation is that it can happen on its own but if you end up 40 weeks and still no dialation then the doctor will want to induce the labor. Obviously this is your first pregnancy so it might take longer during labor or it might not. It all depends on the baby and what he or she wants to do.

You never know I was dilated to 3 for a month before I had my daughter and I went 5 days over my due date. She could go 40 weeks or more but the doctor won't let her go that far, they will induce her labor.

Every woman's labor is different. I've heard it said that you will take after the way your mom gave birth. But who knows. Besides, 36 weeks isn't even full term yet. Don't be in such a hurry for the baby to come out, the longer they are in the better it is for them. Did you go to Lamaze class? They explain all this there.

the baby will come when it's ready.. just because dilation has not begun doesn't mean anything.. it can and does happen at any time and can go fast or slow.. best to talk to your ob/gyn.. they would better be able to explain this and discuss any concerns you might have...
