About a third of African American men are under the supervision of the criminal justice system, and about 12% of African American men in their 20s and 30s are incarcerated.

In 1997, two-thirds of all juveniles in custody in public facilities were minorities. The Bureau of Justice Statistics estimates the lifetime chances of a person going to prison are 2.5 percent for whites, 9.4 percent for Hispanics and 16.2 percent for blacks. The BJS also estimates that, based upon current rates of first incarceration, an estimated 4.4 percent of white males will enter prison during their lifetime compared to 16 percent of Hispanic males and 28 percent of black males.

a third of all African-American males aged 20-29 are right now either locked up, on probation, or on parole.

jail and prison are the same thing just to let you know. But sure, that statistic could be true. There are no laws at all, none, that constrict the publication of statistics. As long as you can back up the numbers with mathematical evidence then you can publish what ever you want. For example: 100% of coffee drinkers will die of cancer before they are 50 years old. That is a true statistic, but obviously it's not a fact. Stats are soooo easy to manipulate. The one you speak of here could be from a study of ten black people. Eight had been to prison, two hadn't been. All they have to do to make a stat like that is go up and ask them if they've been in prison. Bam, right there, 80% have been to jail. Now the people doing the study could have just gone out and got 8 convicted criminals and two guys they found at the library. Don't believe any statistics you hear. I can make a stat that 100% of the question on yahoo answers were asked by you, if I wanted to.

The actual figure from the U.S. Department of Justice as of 1998 is 1 in 4 black males are either in jail or on probation.

I do not know actual stats on this but they do not sound right at all--it is just too high for reason----I do know that there are alot of people that love to throw out stuff they have no hope in hell of backing up and this sounds like one of "those" people---if and when you've had enough--tell him so--and if it presists--make a formal complaint

no i've never heard of this and personally i wouldn't put to much credence in his comment, I've known several black youths and not even one of them has a criminal record of any kind what so ever, as a matter of fact two of them are college students and are damn near A students, as for your co worker just let him have his little opinion, it's his own ignorance that betrays him as a moron and other people will see what you see when he open his mouth and starts to babble on about things that he hasn't even thought about before he say's them, just sit back and let him make a fool of himself.

you know if he is making those comments at work - that can be considered harrassment and you can press charges - under the same law that covers sexual harrassment - you need to speak to your boss about his racist comment - and tell him that you do not like the harrassment he is infliecting with his racist views - if he continues consider a law suit for a hostile work envornment

African-Americans are 12% of the U.S. population but 70% of our prison population - not sure if that helps.

Whoa. DO NOT go into an argument with a dumba$$. Let him make up whatever he likes, but you stay out of it. It is inappropriate to say such things at work, and don't let yourself get sucked up into it.
