You've brought up a question that has been asked since Dylan hit the scene in the sixties. Many find his style of singing a little like fingernails over a chalkboard.
But, you said it yourself. It was always about the lyrics. If you look up the lyrics for his songs on the web, read and grasp the *message*.
Then, after the depth of his lyrics grabs you, you start to develope a liking for his voice/music. It's an acquired taste...like for beer or wine. I bet you didn't really like your first sip of beer....but now, see? :-)
As for worship? Well, I dunno about all that. Why do people worship m&m? Would you call it worship? OK, powerful lyrics matched with hypnotic beats. Pretty spunky attitude, too. But more than that? Who can't do all that? Is there something more there of value?
People will always run after their idols...and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Bob Dylan is Everyman who just happens to write some of the greatest lyrics of all time. So what if he can't sing all that well, how many of us can?
His music inspired a generation and continues to inspire those who will take the time to listen to the words. He speaks for all of us.
People today worship guys like 50 Cents and rappers who go around yelling about killing cops, stealing crap and not getting caught and use more profanities in one "song" than you'll hear in a men's locker room after a bad game. At least Dylan's lyrics are ones you aren't afraid for your kids to listen to.

Bob Dylan is one of those rockers who embraced the hard life on the streets of his time, and wrote well what he saw: society torn by modern changes, a old generation seating aside as a newer free-spirited one took over, a war nobody cared much for--but conflicted on how to voice out against it.
Dylan loved to write and sing (no one cared if he could do the latter); it was his passion with a lot of pride in his music (something sorely missing today) a unique sound and that earned his place in fame, rock n' roll and his honored place in the Rock n' Roll Hall Of Fame.

That's just it. He wrote really good lyrics. Other than that, there isn't a real reason for him to be so popular. I often wonder the same thing about My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way and 50 cent. They can't sing and/or rap, but for some inexplicable reason they have such a huge following.

Dylan is the greatest living poet 200 years from now(if mankind survives)people will still be quoting him. Your rite it's all about the lyrics but he is also a great musician.

Personally I don t find Bob Dylan such a big deal at all. For me, Chris De Burgh is by far the more superior singer song writer that Dylan could only wish to be. Add to that, Chris De Burgh actually has an amazing voice to sing with.
There is a single Dylan song I enjoy, that s The Times They Are A Changing . At the time this album was released Dylan actually showed he could sing, now it s just bloody aweful and dare I say it there s even evidence of plagiarism in his more recent works.
For me, the guy lost it singing songs like Everybodys gotta get stoned . Seriously, it s a known fact that smoking dope gives you a very high chance of developing Schizophrenia in later life. Something I m wondering about with Mr Dylan. Alright it wasn t really that well known back then but for someone who wrote lyrics about the times etc, it s sad his career had to lead to that and now I can t tell what s worse Leonard Cowens slit thy wrists in the shower albums or Bob Dylans droning dull and lifeless ditties .

I think its because he has always done what he wants. He has never conformed (and he's a smart *ss, lol). Alot of people admire that about him. Some people doesn't like his voice, but I love it.....its different, I don't know anyone else who has his voice. lol
