For the same reason why people eat junk food, don't exercise, have unsafe sex, drink excessive amounts of alcohol, use illegal drugs, etc. They don't believe in their own mortality. All those "bad" things that happen...happen to "other" people, not them. It is an inherent survival mechanism that we all have in some way, shape, or form.

You know that smoking cigarettes has been portrayed in movies and music for a long time as something only the cool people do. Stupid people actually believe this and start smoking, even though they hate it and it's nasty. Then, after they smoke long enough they become addicted and feel like they can't stop. They stink, taste awful, kill you, and the people you smoke around. Sure am glad I am not stupid. I've never believed the hype. I'm cool because I don't smoke!

You R 100% correct, but unfortunately, I started at 14yo and it has become a very annoying HABIT and habits which are addictive are extremely hard to break for some while others have no problem breaking them.
I've tried everything from hypnosis, acupuncture, and the patches under Dr. guidance and no luck.
I'm really disgusted with myself; especially when I think about the cost. I smoke 3-5 cartons a month. Add it up-UGH!

I don't smoke but I think that smoking isn't as bad as a few other things. like drinking alcohol. If you are driving and smoking you aren't going to kill innocent people whereas when you are drinking and driving you just might kill someone. I would rather be a smoker than a drinker. I drink about 1 time every 3 months, and I don't drive when I do.

They dont want to smoke.
It is so highly addictive. It is a grip you never want on your body. I quit when my little daughter was age seven, and she asked me to.
I used to dig in the trash find a cigaretter but, wipe off the coffee grounds and dry it with my hair dryer. However, I did quit.
I would call that a major addiction.
However, I am better at talking myself out of things, than in to things. I think.... That sounds rather dumb... haha>>> Oh Well...

Once upon a time, thirty years ago, I snorted Heroin. I said, wow, it felt so good, I knew I would absolutely never try that again. And, never did I. My only addiction is Caffein. I allow it once a day, and give it hell housecleaning, running beach stairs, and then thats the end of my Jack.

People start smoking for all kinds of reasons. To fit in, to deal with stress, just to try it, etc. The problem is that once you start, it is very difficult to stop. Once you become addicted, it takes willpower and support from others to quit. I've heard from people who quit many years ago that it is still difficult not to start smoking again when they see somebody else smoking or smell it in the air.

You can't understand smokers if you've never smoked yourself.

Health is never a motive to start smoking, although it's always is with quitting it.
