This always cracks me up.
We Jews call ourselves Jews, and expect other people to call us Jews. However, some people use the term "Jew" to mean a cheap person or someone who cheats you, and if that's what you mean then, yes, it's offensive.
I always get a giggle when someone bends over backwards not to use the word "Jew." If you think it's an epithet, perhaps you've been saying it a not terribly nice way?

A Jew is a Jewish person. They are proud to be called a jew....A Damn Jew is different. They don't care for it.
Then you have Alan Dershowitz An Atheist Jew.

I don't think they are insulted by it by it does depend on how it's said. I think "Jewish" is preferred.
