I had a veiled chameleon for 4 years and it was generally friendly. However, if they are frightened or feel threatened they will puff up with air and hiss. This is their natural instinctual reaction to predators. If you handle them regularly they get used to being around people and show less anxiety.

chams come with different personalities, to be sure. once i had a truly hysterical one ( for example it would go mad and squirm all day each time when shedding just because the skin was hanging off him, normally chams jut ignore this). now i have a real darling that never hisses. the first i had hissed and bite, and never ate when a strange person was at sight, so i thought it was just the way it was - no handling, but when i was on holiday my father tamed him so he would allow him to take him out and rest on his arm and look around and be happy. so even if yours is on the agressive side, it can be gradually accustomed to you. try to take him out and let him rest in sunshine - of what i know that is the best way to make a cham enjoy some outing and handling, yes, direct sunshine.
