I have been researching a similar idea myself. When my son was three years old we had to wake up very early in the AM, (when it was still dark outside) to take my husband to work. Sometimes my son would look sleepily through the raindrops on the truck window and cup his hands around his eyes as if they were glasses and he'd say, "Look! Mommy it's the light beaters!" He would smile and flutter his hands open and shut like a butterfly.
Actually he was seeing the street lights reflecting through the raindrops. But the word "Light Beaters" and the butterfly like movements had me puzzled.
Last year while I was listening to an audio book about ancient Burmese and Chinese beliefs I heard about this idea that while we sleep our souls take flight in the form of a Butterfly spirit and fly around...invisably...I guess. And that if the spirits don't make it back to the body or loses it's way the person may die or never wake up or something like that. I'm not quite clear on all of it, but I am piecing it together bit by bit.
After some time I read another book about Burmese culture and found there is a poem called
'The Tale of the Journey of the Liep Beah'---To me it sounded so similar to my son's "Light Beaters" that I was stunned. The poem is also about these suposed Butterfly like spirits.
So one day I asked the question to Yahoo Answers..."Do you ever feel like you are dreaming all of this?" One person replied with this quote by Chuang Tzu...
"Once upon a time, I, Chuang Tzu, dreamed I was a butterfly, fluttering hither and tither, to all intents and purposes a butterfly. I was conscious only of following my fancies as a butterfly, and was unconscious of my individuality as a man. Suddenly, I awoke, and there I lay, myself again. Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly dreaming that I am a man."

I still don't know much about this, however I am always on the look out for more info. That's why I was drawn to your question.

I think this happens to my uncle's friend. While sleeping a wasp entered his right ear and woke him up suddenly. Poor uncle Matt, his soul was I heard in Paris on top of the Eiffel Tower. Dizzy from the height and the communication gap in translation, his soul did not make it back on time. I do not know if it went back to France or stay here hanging around a disco(uncle Matt loved the night life) because uncle Matt had always dream going to Paris.
