Why does everybody blame America for slavery? American's were on their way TO America, Stopped by Africa. Purchassed a product that Africans were selling, had been selling. Which happend to be other Africans they were hunting down putting chains on making into slaves and selling, and American's happened to buy, so why is it Americans fault? Wouldn't that make it African's fault. And it happened so long ago why cry about it now, life is better in America than Africa isn't it? If you had a choice?

British nobles voaged over from England to The New Land. They were used to having servants or maids to do the housework. Then somewhere they hear about Africans. And they decide that the Africans should be shipped over to America as slaves. Hence the chaining. Anway, they shipped the Africans to the America in tightly packed boats. They were chained together and bairly had room to roll over. And they were beaten if they didn't cooperate. When they arrived, they were bound to their plantation. They were owned by the plantation owners. Their job was to work the fields. If they tried to run away, they were hurt badly or killed. A bit later in time, the Africans decided to revolt. Harriet Tubman falls into the mind here. And along came the Civil War because the north believed that every one should be treated equally. And the north won. So slaves were no longer allowed. Sometimes families were split during the Civil War. Some people join the South, and some the North.

Basically, black people were new to the world. British people were insecure with them, and didn't exept them as an equal. They made them their slaves. It all had to do with skin color. And to think, a whole war and time period could've been avoided if they just accepted the color of another human being's skin.

Why don't you do a little research honey. The slave trade was started by the dutch first of all. Second blacks began being sold to americans as indentured servents and then they were latter made into slaves. The kings and queens of africa didn't know that they were going to be used as slaves. The europeans who brought the Africans over on the slave ships didn't just happen to stop by and pick up a bunch of africans. They went their specifically for that reason. That is pretty sick that you refer to human beings as products. You talk about how long ago slavery happened and like black people should just get over it or something. Why don't you educate yourself before you go rambling on about things that you have no idea about. Why cry about it now because the racisim is still going on today. Blacks were enslaved, treated and beaten like animals for over 400 years. Slavery ended in 1865 it is now 2006 thats only 141 years that blacks have been free. They didn't have equal rights until the 1960s so just get over it I don't think so. You can't abuse a child their entire life and then at age 75 tell them to stop crying about it, So what makes you think that an entire race of human beings can be treated so badly for 400 years and then just have a complete turn around in the last 141 years. They were taught to be weak. The slave owners would take the biggest strongest man and beat and kill him so that mothers would raise their children to be weak out of fear that thier children would be killed for being strong. They had their language, religion, and their customs ripped away from them. How would you feel if everything you knew was taken away from you. If you ask a white person what nationality they are they can tell you that they are irish ,italian, german, greek ect. if you ask a black person they say their black they don't have the privleage to say that they are kenyan or nigerian because that was ripped away from them hundreds of years ago, but yet still to this day no african american can tell you their true heritage. Blacks were not allowed to read or write, they were taught that this was for white people only, yet still today this is instilled in many african americans. This whole slave mentality and thought process was beaten into them and was passed down from generation to generation and is still being passed on by some, and you wonder why some black people may feel resentment. People wonder why black people always think that bad thing that happen to them is because they are black, probably because every horrible thing that has happened to black people in this country's history was because they were black.

This is towards LADY GEMINI’s answer. Jews had nothing to do with slavery. It is pretty ignorant of you to think so. Jews have had their time as slaves themselves and are against such things. Back to the question – Only in America do people speak of America as being at fault. World wide – the blame is towards all countries involved. Quick something to point out: If a family is hungry and the daughter of this family has no choice but to sell her body for food to feed her family – is it her fault? Or is it the fault of the customers she gets? Or is it the fault of the environment that placed her in such a situation? I believe that just because there was those screwed up people that kidnapped their own and sold them does not make it right for others to buy them and enslave them. The ones that created such a market – that would tempt desperate people to do terrible things so that they can survive – shouldn’t they be the ones to blame? I believe that the whole willingness to make a human being a slave is wrong. Plus – no one can really be clear with such an answer unless they have experienced complete desperation.

well that is true for some of the slaves. but that's not the entire truth either about MOST of the african slaves that were here. also it was the over the top mistreatment of the people they brought here. the molestations and brutal, down right savage beatings they issued out to them. no, slavery was, most certainly as savage as the slavery in egypt we read about that the hebrews had to suffer. the fault lies in the extreme abuse. and there are parts of africa that are quite beautiful. (you've never been there, neither have i, but i know some people who were born and raised there, and YES they're white! imagine that, white africans). this is clearly a racist question in the guise of a "serious" one, but i'm not buy it. and no one is "crying" about it now. so why are you even thinking about it?

Well...I don't anyone blames American for slavery in general, just the slavery that occured in America. And just because some Africans offered their African captives for sale doesn't mean that Americans (or anyone else) were justified for buying them. Slavery was wrong.

Now, no one today deserves blame for slavery. We are still dealing with a cycle of poverty among African Americans that partially has slavery at its roots, but I think very few people today actually have actively racist worldviews. We all have prejudices, but I think most people deal with them in a more sophisticated fashion today (no one enslaves, lynches, or legislates against anyone else). So dwelling on slavery is not helpful in solving problems in America today. We should try to eliminate the cycle of poverty among African Americans and all impoverished people and continue building an enlightened society.

Slavery is a black mark on our country's past in both the North and the South. Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation only abolished slavery in the seceded states; Northern states loyal to the Union were still allowed to have slaves until the 13th Amendment was ratified after the war. After the Civil War, folks in America finally realized that slavery was wrong, and they began the process of rectifying the wrongs done to the enslaved people in our country. Our government was to blame for allowing slavery to exist until 1865, and our government was and is responsible for dealing with the consequences of slavery.

It wasn't America's fault that slavery began.

It was your fault that you were the last civilised country to abolish it, and it took a civil war to accomplish that. It was your fault Black American, the descendants of the slaves, didn't achieve fully equal rights until the sixties, and even then southern states tried to circumvent those laws.

But, you didn't start slavery, so none of it's your fault is it!

Back in the days when slavery began, no one saw it as wrong. Of course it is. I'd like to mention that Britain played the leading role in abolishing slavery, and all the European countries stopped not long after.

The Negroes had slavery as part of their culture for millenia, when they were captured in war, they became slaves, usually temporarily. It was Arab traders who turned it into the huge trade it became.

America gets blamed for it because we did own slaves and it don't make it Africa's fault because America bought them. It may have happened long ago but it is part of America's history and some people don't know how to let things go.

That's like asking why we blame the crackhead when he bought crack from someone else. It is America's fault because America did it. Not very many people complain about it now, because it's no longer happening as much as it was then (now we've moved on to slaves from other contintents looking for citizenship). However it is part of our history, and we can't change that. We HAVE to remember it so that we learn from it and move on to be a better society for it.

I don't think people do blame America solely for slavery. It is widely acknowledged that Africans captured and sold other Africans. It is also acknowledged that the imperialist powers such as the UK, France, Spain, Holland and Portugal were also to blame.
