Black powder is a mixture of saltpeter (potassium nitrate or, less frequently, sodium nitrate), charcoal and sulphur with a ratio (by weight) of approximately 15:3:2 respectively.

I have two friends who were injured making and using black powder in homemade cannons. Brian has blue specks like tattoo ink on half of his face and chest that are permanent because of a mistake. Another lost the tip of his index finger. Be smart, ask an adult to go to the local sporting goods store and buy some gunpowder for black powder firearms (it has a slower burn rate than smokeless powder), and ask them to supervise any activities that may require its use. However, even though I am a black powder enthusiast and a reloader, I cannot think of any educational activities that would use gunpowder.

Otis F has given you the formula. My friends and I used to make it in high school. We would remote detonate it using the wire you use to fire off rmodel rocket engines (not sure if they still do it that way; it's been 25 years). Treat it as you would any dangerous substance, and you should be OK.

Oh, and don't smoke anywhere near it. :-)
