Guinea pigs are naturally more social animals than hamsters. guinea pigs live in groups in the wild while hamsters are solitary animals in the wild. guinea pigs are diurnal (awake during the day) while hamsters are nocturnal (awake during the night).
With the above information you can make an educated decision for your self. I personally think that the guinea pig is better.

I personally think hamsters, like small dogs (or "yipyips") are useless. As a child we had pet guinea pigs and they were always a joy. At one point we did have a couple of hamsters. All I recall of them is that they were sometimes fun to watch in their tunnels, but when the male ate the offspring I was very upset- disgusted, too. I've read that a Guinea Pig boar can be aggressive toward the pups and that separation is necessary.
My son and I have Guinea Pigs today and their personalities are quite distinct.
