Any antivirus without updated virus signatures is virtually worthless. Antivirus applications, including Norton, performance is directly related to the signature database. Antivirus application are notorious for having poor heuristic scanning. Heuristic scanning allows the AV to detect viruses based on traits common to all viruses. Scores of new viruses appear every hour of the day. Good antivirus security firms, like Norton, aim to have a virus signature within 3 hours of its discovery on the Internet. Hundreds of new viruses appear each day. Please refer to PC World article.

If you don't want to renew it, there are some excellent freebies like Antivir 7 Personal Edition. They have updates of the virus codes at least 1 time a week, and you can set it to scan your system in the background, update in the background, as well as what to scan, how to scan it. I've been using it for 10 years and I haven't had any problems with it VS Norton. Free for personal use and free updates with superior virus protection. Check it out. There are others, but this is the one I have personal use of.

do you mean UPDATE..

if you dont update then you wont be able to get the new virus database.. there are 2 ways on how to update them..

1st is by AUTOMATIC or SCHEDULED UPDATE...see option..
*if update started then you have to wait until if finishes and install the new database...
2nd is by getting the manual update from their site... THIS IS EASIER TO DO if you dont open you computer that much...
*you do the update by installing the .........exe file that you have gotten from norton web site anytime you want....

OR IF YOU REALLY MEAN RENEW meaning your norton has an expiration date....

YES it will stop working if time expires....
there are several ways of making it contineously working but not recomended since it may cause you DISK DAMAGE... llike for example...after norton expires FORMAT REINSTALL WINDOWS... formating your hardisk very often may lessen the disk life...or another way is by unregistering NORTON from registry key...NOT JUST UNINSTALLING IT...but also can cause a lot more HEADACHESSSS....if you messed up...

costly God, NO do not renew your account. in fact, burn any Norton CDs which you will have. Uninstall the appliance and by no ability reinstall ever back. look at slightly gem referred to as AVG Anti-Virus. unfastened and works lots better.

Don't use two antiviral products together as they may be incompatible. If your Antiviral trial has run out, then remove product from your computer and get the AVG installed.

YOU SHOULD RENEW, EVERYTIME IT ASK TO. EVERYDAY NEW VIRUSES ARE PRODUCED AND YOU NEED TO UPDATE YOUR VIRUS PROGRAM CONTINUOUSLY.
