No I don' believe the country went to hell when he died. The country went to hell because the people living in it made it go to hell.

Well Pardner, I am sure that the Duke would be proud of the fact that you feel he was responsible for keeping the country together. Yes the Duke was an inspiring actor, he smoked, drank, cussed, womanized and yet you feel that he was the man who kept the country from going to hell.
