I believe it is because some people love to hear themselves speak or in this case see themselves type. They should work on getting a life.

well maybe they have something to say about a few things that other people won't let them say...or maybe they like to see a lot of words on the page
Maybe they like to type...maybe they want to be your friend
Or could they just love to type...what does the word type mean anyway
And If you ask a question don't you want to have a lot of answers?
When I ask a question the longer the better...I like to see all answers
Of course if it gets to long like this answer then I usually get bored
In fact I am bored now but I just wanted to make this very long
Still I don't think it is long enough
It sure would be a bummer if you delete this answer I worked hard on it ...oh well be that way

According to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, researchers from a pan-dimensional, hyper-intelligent race of beings constructed the second greatest computer in all of time and space, Deep Thought, to calculate the Ultimate Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything. After seven and a half million years of pondering the question, Deep Thought provides the answer: "forty-two."

It depends on what the question is. When its a computer related question and they want a list of directions, then it could grow quite long.
Some think that if their answers are long, then they might get chosen for best answer.
I usually try to be desciptive with my answers so that people understand exactly what they need to do if they have a computer problem. I dont think they do it intentionally to annoy someone.

The answer to this question is quite simple. Or maybe it is more indepth. It could be both simple and indepth. (Is indepth one word, or should it be spelled in depth?) People like to give answers that are thorough for many reasons, which I will list here:
1. People who give lengthy answers want to be chosen for best answer. This is very important to many people, because they need the validation that people respect the things they are saying. I consider myself to be in this class. I like to get points for my answers.
2. Some people are genuinely interested in some topics. If you ask a question about dogs, then you are going to get all of the dog lovers answering your question, and they will be giving you all of the information they know about the subject. They like to share their knowledge. They want you to be as knowledgeable as they are.
3. Some people get angry about certain topics, and they want to prove that they are right. This is seen a lot in the religion section. Dare someone say they don't believe in god, there will be twenty people with their bibles, quoting passage after passage, as if this is going to change the mind of the person who asked the question.
4. A lot of people just don't know how to condense their knowledge. These people have minds that are all over the place, and it is difficult for them to organize all of their information into short, concise answers.
I hope this helped a little! Let me know if you want some more reasons, and I will be happy to give them to you. Don't hesitate to ask!

Because sometimes a question can't be answered in just a few words. Why should anyone bother to answer a question if they are not going to fully answer it in a way that even the village idiots should be able to understand it.

it kind of depends on how much thought is needed for the answer- I tend to ramble on in some of my answers. If it's a basic "tell me about so-and-so" people will copy and paste off a website and post the whole thing rather than link it.
Very annoying indeed!

Because most people don't know how to ask a question - so others have to provide an answer for every possible contingency.

It all depends on the question and what's being asked. If it's technical, of course you're going to get more from an experienced person. That's pretty much it.

People are trying to answer what may seem to them like a complex question with a comprehensive answer so you don't feel like you got ripped off.
If you don't want to read comprehensive answers, don't. No one's holding a gun to your head. However, don't complain about people who are freely giving you their time, that's just plain rude.

Complicated questions deserve complicated answers. Simple questions deserve simple answers. If you asked me; "Who plays first base for the Cardinals?", I'd say "Albert Pujols". If you asked me, "Does God exist?", you'd get a book.
