I'm a fifty-year-old guy who's utterly clueless about this. As for the ethics part, I'm an idealist who works for peanuts and for me, CDs at $16 each are unaffordable.

CDs are only $9.99 if you want to download legally....

As for pirating music, it's safe for the most part. I believe last I read the amount of people being caught for illegal downloading was slightly fewer than one in every two thousand, and the majority of those people who are being charged are those who share music for others to download, not people who just take.

I'd use torrents over anything else. Stay away from LimeWire, because while it may have a good selection it's ridden with spyware. Soul Seek, Ares and BearShare are all better bets.

Ethically speaking: you can download; just don't pass around and/or sell.

I think downloads get the "classic" rockers and country artists off their duffs and back onto the stage, facing the challenges of creating NEW material which I can only hope snuffs out the garbage we all have to put up with currently.

To small degrees: downloads are OK; larger degree of downloads get the movie/music biz folks in an uproar--quite understandably. Alternative rock may kill rock n' roll; but downloads keep rock n' roll alive (unfortunately they keep alternative and (c)rap alive, too).

Well I sugest doing file shareing. The file sharing that most people use is Lime wire or kazza. Both are ok, I personly use lime wire. And if you use one of these dont download anything big because that is what can get you viruses and spyware.

Also you might whant to run a viruses/spyware check after you download alot of stuff.

Yep it's pretty secure--in fact it's VERY secure!
If you want a secure downloading without paying just go to download.com and look for Ares 1.9.1.3010 because it is really good and faster than other P2P downloading. When it is downloaded, look for the Ares Galaxy Turbo Booster to make downloading faster. Believe me you don't have to pay, millions of people do it, and it is SECURE!
Hope this helps!

downloading without paying is a crime. I have done it but its not right. try one of those monthly things. yahoo unlimited is $5 a month for unlimited music, yahoo doesnt work on ipods though, so if you have an ipod there are other affordable pay per month download services, many of them legal.

I used to use Kazaa, but it got really bad with the adware. I couldn't do ANYTHING on my computer cause it was always freezing. I use Limewire now. It's much better.

Limewire is the safest cause it doesn't put spyware on your computer but Ares is the best cause you can find more songs there.
