Hey all;
Aren't behaviorists psychologists too? It seems that Bandura (even though he's a "social cognition" dude) was able to cure a Snake-a-Phobe in a couple of sessions of desensitization, with little higher level involvement that would exclude anything but humans from benefiting from similar treatment.
Someone adept at classical and operant conditioning would seem to be able to shape Scooby's unconstructive behavior with a few scooby snacks, extinction, or scooby zaps (if they are a rat researcher/behaviorist). Not much different than a trainer. I would buy into the idea that a psychologist should be able to train and shape pet behavior above that of the regular person trying to deal with her/his pet's issues. Better yet, the psychologist could impart some of their wisdom on some of the manic/hysteric owners that the pets have to suffer.Things like learned helplessness, efficacy, cognition and attention would all be helpful to know for problem solving.
So, if you lose you psych license, there is always room in the pet biz.

Like a psychologist for pets? There's no such thing officially. No psychological training is aimed at pets so anyone who does that is a fraud, an idiot, or both.

If it's just some person who doesn't claim to be a psychologist, that's a different story.

There are pet psychologists. My vet recommend that I took my dog to one. Because she was biting everyone in the family. We ended up putting her to sleep, because no one would adopt her, and it was too expensive to take her to a pet psychologist.

Psychologists make lousy pets.

Well, I had to get that out. Actually, some are legitimate, considering that so many people know less than next to nothing about animals, so I think that they might actually help the animals by helping the people who own them understand them better.
