No, Italy is playing without one of their starters also (the guy who elbowed McBride, can't remember his name at the moment).

Shollstein is absolutely RIGHT. Torsten Frings and Michael Ballack are the real center of the German team. They do everything. Frings's playing really helped the Germans in the game against Argentina. He cut off a lot of passes that were going towards the Argentinean strikers. It wasn't a miracle that Germany won even when the Argentineans were outplaying them. It was because of Frings. Now with Frings's suspension, they are going to have a BIG hold in defence, and Italy is going to use this hole as an advantage to score. Putting in Borowski won't help matters. Borowski is a good player, but he's on the offensive side. It won't help Germany's defence.

He plays in the defensive midfield and is the sweeper in front of the defense. I think he was the best man in the German team in the win against Argentinia. The Argentinians may have had much more ball posesion during the game but very few real scoring chances, which was due to Frings' outstanding play.
So the Italians knew what they were doing when they went after him.
The possible replacemants are Kehl, who didn't play much so far or Borowski, who played good games so far but then he's more offensive minded.
On the other hand, this made a lot of people in Germany including the team very angry. The Italians can expect a hot crowd and a hot team in Dortmund, so I don't know whether the whole thing really helped Italy.

Of course it will, since Italy paid FIFA to suspend him. After all, we are a nation of cheaters and corrupts, aren't we?
Hahahahaha, how far will the evil tongues go?
Seriously, though: No. It won't help Italy because Germany have a lot of good players and can easily replace him. Plus, Germany are playing on their own soil. They are those who are advantaged. They'll fight until the end to get into the final. They couldn't stand not making it on their own field. So, they are highly motivated to win!

Not really...it's just that his suspension may damage the other players' morale. Also, this is very controversial, as the player that Frings allegedly punched says that he was never hit or beaten. That leads some to believe that there is some sort of FIFA conspiracy to oust the German team.

I agree Frings was very important in this WC for the Germans. His questionable suspension was a major blow to the German team.
