Foxes do not make good pets. They are not stay at homes, they don't like to be held or petted, they don't bond with humans....and this is true even if you get them when they are still kits.
They are very handsome animals but they should be left in the wild to do their thing. Any "rescue center" should realize that and should not give foxes to people, but rather return them to their natural habitat once they are "rescued."

I once met someone who kept a hare in a small rabbit hutch and run. When I asked when they were going to release it they looked really shocked and said it was too dangerous, it might get hunted or run over. They said it came out at night to feed. It wasn't even on grass, the run was on concrete. The longer they kept it the less chance it had of surviving in the wild.
It was as sad as a zoo animal pacing up and down. It had started life as a wild animal, they had found it as a leveret and kept it. What sort of life is that? Just living in a dark box. It will never mate, rear young, run around, eat grass or do any of the things that a normal hare would do; all because the "owners" can't bear the thought that it might face danger. Wild animals face danger every day, its a sad part of their lives but they don't brood over it. Its only humans that live in fear.
Foxes are not like dogs and they make terrible pets. If anyone has looked after a 'fearbiter' they'll know what I'm talking about.
I know people mean well but it's like wrapping your kids in cotton wool and never letting them out of the house, the first time they meet real responsibility or a problem they don't have a clue how to cope.
and thats another thing, what kind of rescue center would give you a fox? It should have gone to a bone fide wildlife center. Theres too many unlicensed unregistered places and theres no real scheme for inspecting them or how they are run. I don't donate money to small places at all. I know they mean well but thats just not enough.

Ok, first of all, it is illegal in many places to keep wild animals as pets. Foxes are also major carries of rabies. If it is from a rescue center, there are usually a couple of scenarios:
A) Fox was injured and is on the way back to health and being released
B) Fox was injured beyond fending for itself in the wild and is unreleasable
C) Fox was orphaned as a kit and was brought up by ignorant people who imprinted the baby, Now the fox never will know its a fox and can never be released.
D) If none of above, sometimes people just keep wild animals as pets, but they should never be kept! Its not fair to them!
Hope this helps, I worked at a rescue center for some years.

Most likely scenario I can think of is that it may be an 'urban' fox, which they intend to keep till it's 'old enough' / 'better' and then take into the countryside and release it.
That done, it'll possibly just have time to transmit sarcoptic mange to the wild population, before it gets put out of its abject misery by a Gamekeeper or Farmer.
Urban foxes ~ like rats and feral pigeons ~ are disease vectoring pests. And they have about as much chance of lasting a week in the wild as an average, inner city 'Chav'.
Come to that; Add 'Chav's to that list .....
Oh, and if it's a country fox? Much the same result. Dump it down in another foxes, unfamiliar territory and it won't last long either. Miserable end to a miserable existance.

Maybe the fox is to young to go on its own to hunt etc... Or maybe its sick and needs to recover before being released.

i don't think wild foxes should be kept as pets. set them free, as free as the wind. although they'll probably die because they forget how to hunt etc.

Are they actually keeping the fox forever or are they nurturing back to its original health?

You wouldn't... Firstly it is a wild animal and shouldn't be caged...
Anyone who does is mad... Unless it is injured and can't fend for itself... But still it is wild...
