If you're talking about the brine tank, then you should just be able to tip it over and dump the salt and water out. If you have a drain nearby it would be good to do this near the drain. I've never seen any way to drain the softener unit itself. It doesn't contain salt anyway, it's got pellets in it that actually remove the bad stuff from the water. The salt water, (brine), is what cleans the pellets in the softening unit. Good luck

1ST- The salt will need to be taken out with a bucket or cup or shovel while it is still in solid state.
2ND- there should be a valve specked at the bottom of the tank. If not, run it in clean cycle and then wast cycle on the programer if you have one. Make sure the drain pipe is fixed over the drain.

A shop style wet-dry vac works well. Be sure to rinse with fresh water afterward.
