this is like a telephone number. it goes like this.
10.10.100.50.103 and so on..it is 'owned' by your service provider such as Sprint, Global Center, etc.
a person or company that owns web servers gets a couple of IP addresses when they sign up with a provider. the more the better.
each server or computer needs to have an IP address. this is like a trace for your server..like a phone number.
that would be a static IP.
the other type would be called 'dynamic' IP..this number floats around and is avaliable for web servers to use at anytime, but the number changes every time you log on.
static ones of course never change.

An IP address is the numbered location of the information for viewing a web page.
CNN.com (example only)
www.cnn.com could also be listed as 12.124.62.88
The numbers and dots are the IP address.
That is computer talk for the location of the pictures, text and other stuff you will find on CNN.com.
You type in CNN.com on your computer. Your computer turns that into a string of numbers and dots (IP address) and sends that to your server. Your server looks around for the location as dictated by the numbers. The numbers could mean: New York, NY, Comcast Cable Providers, Computer in the basement of the CNN Building, access the computer through the 23rd port on the back. Your server finds the location, grabs the pictures and text, then bounces them back to your screen so you can view them at home.
Simply, IP addresses are like street addresses. They tell your computer where the pictures and text are stored for the website you want to look at.
Originally, there was no www.com . Everything was in IP numbers. Be thankful for the change. :)
