the way i taught my horse to turn and plant his back foot was by having it placed in a small tire and gently pushed on his side with my hand right near where the girth goes, by doing that you are moving his front end instead of his hindquarters. Or if you dont want to use the tire just gently push on the pressure point where the girth goes, he should move his forearm around his hindquarters and yes crops and whips do work but it is better to reward than punish.

The way i taught him to stand up is by repetition. For a week, before I got on to ride I would set him up by picking up and replacing the hoof down then once he stood up I gave him a treat and got on to ride then once i got off, I again stood him up and rewarded him when he did it. Soon he found that if he stood up he would receive a treat.

I havent done it myself but i have seen people training the horse to move only one foot when they touch it with a whip or stick. i can usually get a horse to do it by mistake too.

if you stand by the foot you want to stay still and move the horse in a circle using your arm with or without a whip... they should keep that foot still... i guess with praise and a key word it could be trained similarly to a dog in that sense? anyhelp?

great answers so far...only thing is when i used to judge quarter horses, you were not allowed to touch your horse (other than by their lead) in the show ring. so yes, good answers to start off with...then migrate those movements to where you can do it simply from the lead line. it just takes time...good luck

Hanna c has good advice. So did the person who told you how to turn her. You should have seen me training mine to stand on paperplates so that I could polish her hooves!

Go to the boards at horsecity.com and ask this question- there are people who show for a living, who have great advice and are willing to share it there.
