A dinosaur laid an egg from which something more chicken-like hatched.

As the generations went on, this thing's decendents looked more and more like chickens, until one day they were so different from their ancestors they couldn't mate with them anymore.

Some people say that the egg came first since the chicken evolved from something else, which had already had eggs, but that simply opens the next question - in that species, which came first? Tracing it right back, which would have originated first? I think that the chicken would plausibly have come first, since, following the theory of evolution, we started evolution as bacterium that reproduced without eggs, but rather by a process of cell division; as they evolved, so they evolved into species with the capacity to produce eggs; if there is an egg, it must have been laid by something!

Since the DNA is expressed in the genotype from conception, its got to be the egg. Every chicken was once an egg.

The 'wierd' thing is that there was a mutation or new genetic change from the parent. The whole dilemma is resolved by realizing that somewhere along the way a (very-birdlike) dinosaur laid a (very dinosaur-like) bird egg!

Well, Studies have shown that life started with a single cell organism. This was figured by the adaptation that they grew to multiple cells which were mammals. So the correct answer would be "The chicken came before the egg.

i've never known the answer to this question. The chicken cant come first because you have to have an egg to have a chicken, and then egg cant come first because you have to have the chicken to have the egg.

Im sure something knows the answer, but neither the chicken nor the egg can put a finger or point on it. Or at least, in a way we can't understand. I

Personally I believe the egg, because reptiles leg eggs, and were around long before domesticated birds.
