It depends on your definition and perception of the term popular. There are two main points of view, the heirarcy view (snobish) and the friendship view. If you see popularity as a way to be beter than others or superior, than it is a combination of one's attitude and atributes. The attributes are certainly genetic in a sence of attractivness and sociallability, but are also affected by how one is raised. Natue v. nurture. Popularity starts at a young age so if you view that as a factor that affects the nature aspect, then it certainly affects the attitude you have to make you appear popular. It is then consevable to think the attitude is a biproduct of the genetic predisposition. On the other hand if you view popularity on amount of friends, it is a complete senerio of how you deal with social situations with different personalities, and it is how you work with different people. This changes as you grow and is much more of a mentality and something to work on then a gift in my oppinion.

I think popularity works for different reasons. Some people are just magnetic because they're so comfortable with themselves. Others are just charismatic. And then there are the negative ones who build themselves up by putting others down. I don't think it's something your born with or a mentality; it's just how you handle yourself around other people.

Group mentality, timing, and personality traits - unless you happen to be born with money. That affects popularity deeply.

I think its a matter of personality and as well as how much confidence and support that you get from home. Environment and fate plays an important role in this too.
When I was in kingergarten, there was this girl who peed on herself on the first day of school and everyone in the classroom teased her about it for the rest of the school year. From that point on, nobody liked her and she was constantly picked on and teased throughout high school. Likewise there was another kid whose dad was a police officer and came to school for career day. He ended up being the most popular kid in high school.

being popular or being concerned with being popular just means that you are way too concerned with what others think
