Messenger will go through all the install, then it isn't anywhere to be seen on my CPU. I have downloaded the install to my desktop, used the open then install off the web site too. I ask messenger to launch after install, but nothing- no icons, nothing in programs folders except a folder that says Yahoo. The only firewall I have is the automatic one that comes with bellsouth dsl. I have disabled all spyware, etc. from my start up menu. I have WInXp. When i try to use the messenger on the web, it won't let me add friends. Any suggestions?

Is the Yahoo folder empty? There should be another folder inside called "Messenger" which contains all the files.

If it is empty then check your add/remove programs in the control to see if it's listed. If it is, then uninstall it, reboot and try installing messenger again.

If it's not listed then you have a problem. Scan for viruses and spyware. Then reinstall.

You won't find it on your CPU - that is the Central Processing Unit!
But it should have installed on your Hard-drive (C: usually).
Go to Add-Remove programs in Control panel and Remove any Yahoo related items from there and try again.
Also - do a disk-check on your Local Disk (C:).

To do this, Right-click on My Computer and select Explore. In the left panel, click the + sign to the left of My Computer and scroll down to Local Disk C: then highlight it and right click - then properties - tools and in Error Checking section click Check Now. Check the two tickboxes and agree to any msgs that appear.
Now restart your PC. This process may take 30 mins or more so be patient or go to bed!
Now try re-installing Yahoo Messenger.
If this dont work and you have XP CD, insert disk and exit from the install window which may appear.
Goto START - RUN and type this exactly:
sfc /scannow and click OK. It will take about 5-10 mins to run the scan and will replace missing or damaged system filws in the Windows\system32 folder.
This should work for you.

There could be a software conflict that is preventing you to install the messenger. I recommend you to check the msconfig options for programs that could be running the the back that could be giving you conflicts. Also you could check using safe mode with networking to see if you still have the same installation problems. Software conflict is most of the time the reason of problems during and after installation.
